Understanding Contrast Ratio (of a projector)

 One of the factors to be considered when buying a projector is the “Contrast Ratio”. A higher contrast ratio reflects a better & more saturated image. Contrast Ratio is actually the ratio between the maximum and minimum brightness, or in other words, the ratio between the brightness white and the darkest black.

For example, a contrast ratio of 1000:1 means that the brightness of a completely white image is 1000 times greater than the brightness of a completely black image as depicted in the image below:

A higher contrast ratio naturally also produces images with more saturated colors since the difference between black and white is greater, producing a much greater palette of colors.
